Food cooperatives or co-op's are usually owned by their members for their mutual benefit. There are a number of food cooperatives established in the local region.
The Maple Street Co-op in Maleny is an example of a local food cooperative which has been operating since 1979.
Eudlo Transition Town also has an organic food co-op.
Less formal cooperatives also form when a group of people wanting to buy similar food items get together to organise a bulk purchase directly from a wholesaler or producer. A cooperative using a local producer as a supplier can be likened to Community Supported Agriculture.
If you know of other food cooperatives in the local region please contact us so we can update this site.
The Co-op Food Shop from the ACT also has an informative website that can give more insight into how a food cooperative can be organised and run.
Another site from the UK provides a Food Co-ops Tool Kit - a simple guide to setting up food co-ops
